FIRMS Global Tuna Atlas

The FIRMS Global Tuna Atlas (GTA) builds on historical atlases focusing on one single ocean (Ardill 1995, Carocci and Majkowski 1996) and global experiences and initiatives such as the Atlas of Tuna and Billfish catches (Carocci et al. 2004), the Global Harmonized database for tuna fisheries (Nordtrom and Fonteneau 1996, Fonteneau 1997, 2009, 2010), and the BlueBridge Tuna Atlas (Taconet et al.

Global annual catches from tuna fisheries (1918-2024) (FIRMS level 0)

We constructed the most comprehensive dataset of nominal catches from global tuna fisheries by compiling and harmonizing public domain data from the five tuna Regional Fisheries Management Organizations (t-RFMOs) for the period 1918-2024. Under the auspices of the Fisheries and Resources Monitoring System (FIRMS) of the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO),we developed a systematic data flow process in collaboration with the t-RFMO Secretariats.

Global monthly catches from tuna surface fisheries by 1° grid (1958-2024) (FIRMS level 0)

We compiled a comprehensive dataset of geo-referenced catches from global tuna fisheries that use fishing gears set at the water's surface. This dataset was created by harmonizing public domain data from the five tuna Regional Fisheries Management Organizations (t-RFMOs) for the period 1958-2024. Under the auspices of the Fisheries and Resources Monitoring System (FIRMS) of the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), we developed a systematic data flow process in collaboration with the t-RFMO Secretariats.

Global monthly catches from tuna fisheries by 5° grid (1950-2024) (FIRMS level 0)

We compiled a comprehensive dataset of geo-referenced catches from global tuna fisheries available on a spatial resolution of 5° grid areas. This dataset was created by harmonizing public domain data from the five tuna Regional Fisheries Management Organizations (t-RFMOs) for the period 1950-2024. Under the auspices of the Fisheries and Resources Monitoring System (FIRMS) of the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), we developed a systematic data flow process in collaboration with the t-RFMO Secretariats.

Global monthly tuna, tuna-like and shark catch (levels 1-2) and fishing effort (level 0) datasets (1950-2024) at 1° and 5° spatial resolution

This deposit contains various datasets describing tuna fisheries activities (currently catches and efforts) and different levels of processing on 1° or 5° spatial grids with a monthly temporal resolution.
