SUBMERSE
Mission
SUBMERSE (SUBMarine cablEs for ReSearch and Exploration) is an EU-funded project that aims to utilise existing submarine cables, currently used by the research and education networking community, to monitor the Earth and its systems. By repurposing existing equipment and infrastructure, the project avoids the need to deploy additional hardware on the seabed while improving the overall return on investment by extending the use of these infrastructures. The project plans to collect data from sites located in three countries (Norway, Portugal, and Greece) with access provided through the respective National Research and Education Networks (NRENs).
Expected Impact
During the second half of the Blue-Cloud 2026 project lifetime, the two initiatives held several exchanges to explore potential areas of collaboration. Following these discussions, the projects agreed to formalise their cooperation through the signature of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in September 2025.
Collaboration with Blue-Cloud
The collaboration focuses on the following areas:
- Access to the Blue-Cloud 2026 Virtual Research Environment (VRE): Blue-Cloud 2026 provides SUBMERSE with access to a VRE based on the D4Science infrastructure. This supports the validation of new SUBMERSE components and enable the exploration of possible technical integration and deployment of SUBMERSE services within the Blue-Cloud 2026 ecosystem.
- Exchange of expertise: Both projects share experiences and technical knowledge related to tools and services such as Galaxy, Reference Data management, and OpenEO via Examind, as well as approaches for the development of the Blue-Cloud 2026 Strategic Roadmap and SUBMERSE policy implementation pathways.
- Communication and dissemination: The projects support each other’s outreach activities through joint communication and dissemination initiatives.
