FAME - OSCARS cascading grant project

Mission

FAME is developing a modular and FAIR-aligned framework for marine Species Distribution Models (SDMs), known as GLOSSA v2, building on an earlier prototype limited to presence/absence modelling.
The framework is conceived as a minimum viable product composed of three interoperable R Shiny modules supporting the full SDM workflow, including data acquisition from biological and environmental sources, preprocessing tailored to different data types and marine-specific drivers, and flexible modelling and reporting functionalities. GLOSSA v2 integrates a range of approaches, from statistical and non parametric methods to advanced machine learning and spatio-temporal modelling, while automatically generating metadata to ensure reproducibility and alignment with FAIR principles.

FAME has been funded by OSCARS, which is a European project designed to foster the uptake of Open Science by advancing FAIR research data and cross-disciplinary services within EOSC. Through collaboration among Research Infrastructures in the five EOSC Science Clusters and the provision of funding for small-scale Open Science projects and services via cascading grants, OSCARS supports the adoption of FAIR and Open Science practices across diverse scientific communities.

Collaboration with Blue-Cloud

Within the collaboration with Blue-Cloud 2026, FAME is exploring the development of a dedicated Virtual Lab (VLab) on the Blue-Cloud 2026 platform. This would enable direct access to Blue-Cloud 2026 services and datasets, integration with the Blue-Cloud 2026 and EOSC Catalogues, and enhanced visibility and long-term reusability of SDM workflows and outputs, contributing to more interoperable and data-driven marine research within the EOSC ecosystem.

In order to strengthen the cooperation, the team is in the process of signing a Memorandum of Understanding.
