EDITO (European Digital Twin Ocean)
Mission
The mission of EDITO (European Digital Twin Ocean) is to create a virtual representation of marine and coastal environments worldwide, integrating real-time and historical observations from sensors and satellites. Through advanced technologies like numerical modelling, artificial intelligence, and high-performance computing, EDITO aims to provide information for designing sustainable solutions to protect marine habitats, support a blue economy, and address climate change. Launched by the European Commission, EDITO seeks to democratise ocean information for policymakers, researchers, businesses, and citizens. EDITO-Infra and EDITO-Model Lab are key projects building its operational infrastructure, with the goal of achieving an operational Digital Twin of the Ocean by 2024.
Collaboration with Blue-Cloud
Blue-Cloud and EDITO are teaming up to boost ocean research and digital twin projects. Blue-Cloud's data services align well with EDITO's goals, helping to build the European Digital Twin Ocean. They're working together through workshops and task forces to improve ocean research and open science. They've formed a DTO Taskforce to advise policymakers and researchers. Recently, they held the DTO Taskforce Workshop to align Blue-Cloud data lakes with DTO developments. This collaboration aims to create a sustainable plan for Blue-Cloud 2026 and smoothly integrate its key results into EOSC and the EU DTO, while remaining flexible in case the DTO evolves at a different pace.
