PerfeCt - Performance of Aquaculture under Climate change is an innovative approach to answer the 'What if?' question when establishing and/or adapting aquaculture sites in the light of climate change.
The pilot aims to provide a tool that helps stakeholders ascertain future conditions relevant to aquaculture at a location of interest via a modular geospatial web application that provides a set of expected attributes useful in estimating aquaculture performance on a given location for a desired IPCC climate change scenario.
The team focused on calculating 'expected time to market size' for a number of species and estimating the extent to which occurrence of Vibrio species, a pathogen responsible for the majority of infections, could affect aquaculture.
The application accesses three groups of data:
- Basic data layers (bathymetry, maps of aquaculture sites, marine protected areas) accessed via Blue-Cloud and other relevant data sources, complemented with our own data sets;
- IPCC climate change scenarios of most relevant environmental factors impacting aquaculture;
- Parameters for bioenergetic Dynamic Energy Budget growth model available via Add-my-Pet portal.
The data feed two models responsible for outputs:
- Dynamic Energy Budget model will predict fish growth as a function of expected environmental conditions;
- Vibriosis impact model will predict the extent to which Vibriosis disease outbreaks could be a problem in any given year.
Outputs are displayed as graphical representations, colour-coding, and text.
The application is targeted to everyone interested in aquaculture farming, distribution, and decision-making processes, with the main focus on policymakers, aquaculture farmers, and the general public.
