After our successful Hackathon, which welcomed more than 30 teams from all around the world, we are launching a new webinar series to invite the entire marine research community to test the Blue-Cloud Virtual Labs.
The Zoo & Phytoplankton EOV Products Virtual Lab is developed by the Flanders Marine Institute (VLIZ), in collaboration with the Faculty of Science and Engineering at Sorbonne University and GeoHydrodynamics and Environment Research (GHER) at the University of Liège.
This Virtual Lab provides a description of the current state of the plankton communities and forecasts their evolution, representing valuable information for the modelling, assessment and management of the marine ecosystem.
- Zooplankton EOV: A complete workflow using the DIVAnd software tool (Data Interpolating Variational Analysis in n dimensions) to create interpolated maps of zooplankton abundances. The service is provided as a set of Jupyter notebooks that describe the full procedure to create the final, gridded products. The main dataset for this service is the abundance data, consisting of a set of positions (longitude, latitude) and the bathymetry and distance to nearest coastline datasets used for the interpolation.
- Phytoplankton EOV: A service implementing a methodology to produce phytoplankton EOV products, i.e. global 3D products, by using machine learning-based methods. An artificial neural network (Multi-Layer Perceptrons, MLPs) is trained to produce a vertical distribution of Chla concentrations.
- Scientific validation: A workflow to run a mechanistic model analysis, using near-real-time data to quantify the relative contributions of the bottom-up and top-down drivers in phytoplankton dynamics. The Nutrient, Phytoplankton, Zooplankton and Detritus (NPZD) model used in this demonstrator has been created by Soetaert and Herman (2009). The workflow is provided in R markdown documents and uses parallel computing on the VRE.

Providing access to data resources & interoperable tools for open marine science and applications: Blue-Cloud featured in AtlantECO podcast
The AtlantECO podcast is a science popularisation show, revolving around conversations between the host and a guest to discuss aspects of AtlantECO, a marine science project which focuses on the Atlantic Ocean. The 23rd of November episode of the AtlantECO podcast series was dedicated to Blue-Cloud.
Blue-Cloud Open Science platform as a model for a sustainable Data federation in EOSC: workshop at the EOSC Symposium 2022
The Blue-Cloud model, with its 16 services and million datasets openly available, was discussed during a dedicated session organised on the 17th of November at the EOSC Symposium, the main annual event of the European Open Science community taking place this week in Prague, Czech Republic.
Blue-Cloud highlighted as a successful use case for the Copernicus WEkEO DIAS, enabling marine researchers to access, combine, and share quality environmental data.
Collaboration, cooperation and shared visions are the foundations of every successful synergy. Creating open science platforms to facilitate the use and reuse of oceanic data is a team work activity, and cannot be achieved by one project alone. Blue-Cloud poses special attention to this aspect for creating valuable cooperation among projects operating in the Blue Economy and Marine Research and over the course of the last three years has established strong synergies with initiatives in this area to foster the adoption of its innovative open-science solutions.
For the first time, Blue-Cloud will be a data provider in the Ocean Hackathon organised by Campus Mondial de la Mer, supporting exciting challenges for marine research and the blue economy.
The Wildlife Tracker for Oceans has developed a marine conservation application exploiting data from the Blue-Cloud VLab Zoo & Phytoplankton EOV products. On 26 July the team held a webinar to show how this app was successfully implemented for the Galapagos Whale Shark Project.
