Ocean Literacy Series 3: Artificial Intelligence as a Tool for Ocean Literacy
The health of our ocean is critical not only for marine ecosystems but for the well-being of humanity as a whole. As stated per Ocean Literacy first pillar “Earth has one big ocean with many features”, covering over 70% of our planet. Yet, around 80% remains unexplored or unmapped, making it difficult to fully understand their potential. Currently, only about 7% of the world’s oceans are designated as marine protected areas (MPAs), though many more areas could benefit from protection. Understanding the ocean is essential for protecting our climate, sustaining biodiversity, and supporting the livelihoods of over 3 billion people worldwide.
Because it is difficult to protect what we do not know, artificial intelligence is transforming how we understand our oceans. AI processes vast and complex ocean data to reveal patterns hidden to traditional analysis. It predicts ocean phenomena and fills knowledge gaps in unmapped or inaccessible areas. AI accelerates insights, informs sustainable strategies, and strengthens ocean knowledge and stewardship.
Artificial intelligence enhances ocean literacy by transforming complex ocean data into accessible knowledge. It visualises patterns, predicts ocean phenomena, and translates scientific findings into clear, actionable insights for citizens, educators, researchers, and policymakers. By making ocean science understandable and engaging, AI empowers people to learn, make informed decisions, and actively participate in ocean conservation.
