Blue-Cloud Event
28 April 2026 14:00–15:30
Online

This Blue-Cloud 2026 Virtual Lab aims to develop a web application that allows users to monitor and assess the environmental status of marine areas, by performing online spatio-temporal analysis with the implemented algorithms, for selected environmental variables.

Started in the pilot phase of Blue-Cloud (2020-2022), Marine Environmental Indicators (MEI) VLab (Virtual Lab) enables users to monitor and assess the environmental status of marine areas and support the decision-making process for ocean management. Multiple data sources are integrated into a unified data analysis environment, allowing the online computation of environmental indicators through Jupyter Notebooks, for flexible and reproducible analyses, and dedicated Web Application, for intuitive and code-free access. Functionalities developed in the pilot Blue-Cloud have been improved, including new data sources (physics, biogeochemistry) and new algorithms.

Background

The tool calculates online Metocean information and indicators on the environmental quality of the Mediterranean Sea, using input from Blue Data Infrastructures (BDIs), also improving uncertainty evaluation. A set of Metocean environmental indicators has been defined according to available datasets from BDIs. For each indicator, an analysis and production workflow has been implemented, or further developed and tested.
The current services include: Marine Heatwaves (MHWs), Ocean Heat Content (OHC), Eutrophication Indicator (TRIX), and Storm Severity Index (SSI v2).

The objectives of this demonstrator are to:

  • Calculate and distribute online information and indicators on the environmental quality of the marine area.
  • Obtain new added-value data applying analytical and statistical methods on multi-source data sets.
  • Enable users to perform online and on-the-fly operations, such as selecting a portion of a dataset, to perform statistical analysis or display the data.
