🌊 Blue-Cloud signs MoUs with FAIR-EASE and CLIMAREST!

FAIR-EASE

Mission

The FAIR-EASE project, coordinated by CNRS, focuses on enabling access to FAIR geoscientific data through customised services and virtual research environments. The main objective of FAIR-EASE is to customize and operate distributed and integrated services for the observation and modelling of the Earth system, environment and biodiversity by improving their different components implemented in close cooperation with user-communities, the European Open Science Cloud (EOSC) and research infrastructures in their design and sustainable availability.

By integrating data observation and modelling systems, FAIR-EASE seeks to address interdisciplinary scientific challenges in Earth and environmental sciences.

Collaboration with Blue-Cloud

During the Blue-Cloud 2026 consortium meeting and Federation Workshop in Lisbon, Portugal on the 6th of November 2024, Blue-Cloud 2026 and FAIR-EASE signed an MoU to formalise their collaboration and strengthen their common goal in advancing FAIR (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, and Reusable) data practices.

This MoU establishes a framework for cooperation between the two projects. Key areas of collaboration include:

  • Establishing a working group on data access to share best practices and approaches for accessing and analysing data.
  • Exploring the setup and use of a shared data lake to enhance data storage and processing efficiency.
  • Facilitating the integration and testing of FAIR-EASE components within Blue-Cloud’s Virtual Research Environment

Integration of FAIR-EASE components within Blue-Cloud’s Virtual Research Environment

In order to set up and use a data lake using external services within the FAIR-EASE Data Providers, Blue-Cloud and FAIR-EASE are working on a series of common approaches and best practices, applied to accessing data services and data processing.

FAIR-EASE developed an Earth Analytical Lab (EAL) — the equivalent of Blue-Cloud's Virtual Research Environment (VRE) hosting several Virtual Labs. In order to do this, FAIR-EASE is closely collaborating with Blue-Cloud, which is hosting all the resources for storage and processing on the Blue-Cloud VRE of two FAIR-EASE Virtual Lab pilots, the Marine Omics Observations VLab and the Coastal Water Dynamics VLab,  with resources and core services provided by D4Science.

Best practices and approaches on FAIR Data Management

Blue-Cloud and FAIR-EASE are closely collaborating on developing various training on FAIR practices, and how to use and exploit the data sourced within any of the Virtual Research Environments (VREs). FAIR-EASE related presentations were featured in Blue-Cloud series of webinars on FAIR Data principles. FAIR-EASE is also involved in planning a webinar on the Blue-Cloud Training Academy, to share tips, tricks and best practices.

Workshop "Navigating Data Lakes for Earth and Marine Science", OSFAIR 2023

Blue-Cloud and FAIR-EASE worked closely on the workshop "Navigating Data Lakes for Earth and Marine Science", with the goal of promoting the adoption of FAIR data practices in the fields of marine science and related disciplines. Both Blue-Cloud and FAIR-EASE aim to overcome the seemingly fragmented ecosystem of Open Science by building data platforms in the marine and Earth sciences that federate data infrastructures that follow FAIR principles. During the workshop, Blue-Cloud and FAIR-EASE had the opportunity to share the floor and present the main achievements of the initiatives.
