Thematic Virtual Labs for ocean science at a glance

16 December 2022

The Blue-Cloud thematic Virtual Labs (VLabs) are the main test beds for users to get the hang of the Blue-Cloud framework, exploiting the 10+ million datasets available via the Data Discovery and Access Service, as well as easy access via D4Science and the EOSC federated login, to work on a range of different topics across ocean science.

The opening for testing of the VLabs and the successful Blue-Cloud Hackathon contributed to a sharp increase in terms of users in the Blue-Cloud Virtual Research Environment in 2022.

More than 1000 users including marine researchers, data and computer scientists, and other people from the marine and maritime communities have tested and exploited our Open Science platform, performing research, collaborating with partners from other disciplines and countries.

Virtual Labs in support of Sustainable Development Goals

Blue-Cloud experts from VLIZ, Sorbonne University, CMCC, FAO, have prepared at-a-glance factsheets explaining what researchers can do in these thematic VLabs, also highlighting the societal challenges they will contribute to tackling:

In addition to these, we have also produced factsheets for the three top teams awarded at the Blue-Cloud Hackathon, providing real-life examples of applications for Blue-Cloud assets in the blue economy.

  • Sea Clearly - A tool to assess ocean plastic impacts on and by aquaculture farms
  • PerfeCt - Performance of Aquaculture under Climate change
  • Wildlife Tracker for Oceans - MPA assessment with real-time wildlife tracking & ocean monitoring data

Discover the many possibilities for Open Science in marine research with Blue-Cloud.
