Blue-Cloud’s partners FAO and Italy’s National Research Council strengthen ties

6 December 2019

During the course of the well-received Sustainable Fisheries Symposium organised in Rome last November, FAO and Italy's National Research Council (CNR) agreed to intensify their collaboration in iMarine, a cloud-based community platform powered by the D4 Science Infrastructure aimed at improving fisheries management.

The agreement assured that FAO's extensive knowledge of fisheries and aquaculture will be further integrated in the portal and will be used in data research and development projects. This cooperation was another important step for the promotion of open data and open science around the globe.

The new Memorandum of Understanding is a prime example of collaboration in the science-policy nexus, facilitating work on subjects ranging from databases on vulnerable marine ecosystems, global atlas initiatives for tuna and aquaculture, fish stock assessment tools and the Global Record of Stocks and Fisheries.

Árni M. Mathiesen, FAO Assistant Director General, Fisheries and Aquaculture Department, and Roberto Scopigno, Research Director at the CNR's Institute for Computer Science and Technologies (ISTI), signed the memorandum for the next five years.

Blue-Cloud is one of the many projects and initiatives that will benefit from the commitment undertaken by FAO and CNR-ISTI in maintaining virtual research environments and catalogues. Our project will work towards ensuring that innovations in information technology fruitfully benefit end users and partners in equitable, transparent and inclusive ways.
