While the consortium of the Horizon Europe project Blue-Cloud 2026 already possesses the necessary skills to execute its work plan, it is also supported by an External Stakeholders Expert Board (ESEB) for high level guidance on strategy and policy and leverage of their relevant cross-sectoral networks.
In particular, ESEB Members:
- Provide ad-hoc, independent, competent and timely feedback to the strategy and operations of the Blue-Cloud initiative and its demonstrators (especially assessing impact and user experience);
The Global Record of Stocks and Fisheries (GRSF) and the Fisheries Atlas (FA) VLabs developed in the Horizon 2020 project Blue-Cloud are already operational. GRSF is a knowledge management VLab dealing with best practices by implementing Semantic Web technologies. FA is a spatial data management VLab, complying with OGC standards to manage syntactic interoperability. The VLabs will be extended to capture fisheries data and environmental parameters on a global scale.
The NPZD (Nutrient-Phytoplankton-Zooplankton-Detritus) Virtual Lab was developed in the pilot Blue-Cloud project based on near real-time data of phyto- & zoo-plankton abundances and environmental parameters and tested and validated for the southern part of the North Sea. The current version of the model does accurately predict phyto- & zoo-plankton biomass based on the abiotic conditions provided.
Phytoplankton (as Chl-a) in the NPZD model runs in nitrogen units. However, this model does not integrate any different data than the ones used to predict NPZD biomass.
This Blue-Cloud 2026 Virtual Lab will allow users to monitor and assess the environmental status of marine areas and support the decision-making process for the ocean management. Multiple data sources will be exploited in a unique data analysis service, which will allow the online computation of indicators.
At present, different current measurements are not integrated in common data streams. The spatial and temporal coverage of such datasets are quite varied. New current data products based on those measurements need to be generated to improve the coverage and accuracy of the combined datasets.
Many types of ocean data are available from a variety of sources, but they are not all coordinated or interoperable. Integration of diverse datasets needs to be addressed and demonstrated to facilitate the creation of an effective knowledge base for applications and policy decisions.
A number of data-intensive Workbenches for selected Essential Ocean Variables (EOVs) are being developed and validated in Blue-Cloud 2026 (https://blue-cloud.org/). Data scientists will implement automatic and efficient workflows that allow them to derive data added value products, exploiting the blue analytical services available in the Blue-Cloud Virtual Research Environment.
The Blue-Cloud Data Discovery and Access Service is one of the two main components of the Blue-Cloud technical framework, next to the Blue-Cloud Virtual Research Environment (VRE). It facilitates discovery and retrieval of data sets and data products for external users in stand-alone mode, also interoperable with the Blue-Cloud VRE.
